The Commercial Bank of Syria (CBS) is one of the largest banking institutions in the country. It is linked to the Central Bank of Syria which owns a stake in it. The Commercial Bank of Syria accounts for much of the country’s banking activity with its share of the banking sector’s balance sheet estimated at about 80%. Also, more than 70% of domestic loans and deposits are handled through this bank. It is also considered the bank through which sanctions imposed on the regime are being evaded.
