Ali Darassa a fondé et dirige toujours la milice Unité pour la Paix en Centrafrique (UPC), basée en République centrafricaine, qui a tué, torturé, violé et déplacé des civils, s'est livrée à un grand nombre d'atteintes aux droits de l'homme et de violations du droit international humanitaire, et s'est livrée aussi au trafic d'armes, à des activités de taxation illégales et à une guerre contre les forces de défense et de sécurité de la République centrafricaine ainsi que contre d'autres milices, depuis sa création en 2014. En décembre 2020, il a joué un rôle de premier plan dans la création de la Coalition des patriotes pour le changement (CPC) qui a pris les armes pour s'opposer aux élections et a tenté d'entrer dans la capitale Bangui, en violation des engagements pris par l'UPC dans le cadre de l'Accord politique pour la paix et la réconciliation (APPR) signé le 6 février 2019. Des combattants sous le commandement d’Ali Darassa ont commis des actes qui constituent des atteintes graves aux droits de l’homme et des violations du droit international humanitaire. Le 10 novembre 2014, des combattants de l’UPC ont attaqué les villages de Bolo dans la préfecture de la Ouaka et dix civils ont été tués, dont trois femmes âgées qui ont été brûlées vives chez elles. Le 12 décembre 2017, des éléments de l’UPC et du FPRC ont ouvert le feu sur un hôpital, tuant dix-sept civils, dont quatre enfants. Le 15 novembre 2018, des éléments de l’UPC ont attaqué un camp de personnes déplacées à Alindao, tuant entre 70 et 100 civils. Sous la direction de Darassa, l’UPC a continué de s’opposer au rétablissement de l’autorité de l’État. En 2016, des combattants de l’UPC ont à plusieurs occasions constitué une menace pour le processus électoral. Le 29 mars 2016, des combattants de l’UPC ont tiré sur un poste électoral et blessé plusieurs personnes déplacées. Depuis décembre 2020, en tant que l’un des dirigeants de la CPC, Ali Darassa a participé à des violations de l’APPR, à des tentatives d’empêcher les élections législatives et présidentielle et, de manière plus générale, à la déstabilisation de la République centrafricaine. En raison des menaces proférées par des combattants de l’UPC sous le commandement d’Ali Darassa, les opérations de vote n’ont pas pu avoir lieu le 27 décembre 2020 dans les zones contrôlées par l’UPC, par exemple dans plusieurs régions des préfectures de la Ouaka et du Haut-Mbomou. En janvier 2021, l’UPC a tenté d’entrer dans Bangui par la force.
