For almost 20 years he has been head of the office of Mohammad Nassif Kheir Bek, one of the main security advisers of former President Bashar al-Assad (and officially deputy to the Vice President, Farouk al-Sharaa). Samir Joumaa’s closeness to former President Bashar al-Assad and Mohammed Nassif Kheir Bek means that he is implicated in the policy of repression conducted by the former al-Assad regime against its opponents.
