Nommé brigadier-général des FARDC par décret présidentiel le 11 décembre 2004, dans la foulée des accords de paix d'Ituri. Ancien chef d'état-major du CNDP devenu commandant militaire du CNDP depuis l'arrestation de Laurent Nkunda en janvier 2009. Depuis janvier 2009, commandant adjoint de facto des opérations anti-FDLR « Umoja Wetu », « Kimia II » et « Amani Leo » au Nord-Kivu et au Sud-Kivu. Est entré au Rwanda en mars 2013 et s'est volontairement livré à des fonctionnaires de la CPI à Kigali le 22 mars. Transféré à la CPI à La Haye (Pays-Bas). Le 9 juin 2014, la CPI a retenu contre lui 13 chefs d'accusation pour crimes de guerre et cinq chefs d'accusation pour crimes contre l'humanité; le procès s'est ouvert en septembre 2015. Le 8 juillet 2019, la CPI l'a reconnu coupable de 18 chefs de crimes de guerre et de crimes contre l'humanité commis en Ituri en 2002-2003. Le 7 novembre 2019, il a été condamné à un total de 30 ans d'emprisonnement. Il a fait appel de sa condamnation et de sa sentence. Le 30 mars 2021, la Chambre d'appel de la CPI a confirmé sa condamnation et sa sentence.
